Who Should We Be Talking To

Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and others of the Democratic Party have called for President Bush to boycott the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics as a “symbolic gesture” to indicate to the Chinese government our concern about the suppression of the Tibetans.

In the mean time, former president Jimmy Carter is meeting with the leader of Hamas today to try to open a dialogue and influence Hamas to stop attacking Israel and killing innocent civilians. Everyone knows that Jimmy Carter is one of the patriarchs of the Democratic Party still revered by much of its base. Well, Jimmy Carter is noted for doing the wrong thing at the wrong time even when he was president … and getting praised and rewarded for it. Except, the American public didn’t exactly buy it in 1980. It was a case of “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”

Okay. Let me get this straight.

We’re supposed to snub the country that is one of our major trade partners, if not our largest trade partner. And, then, we’re supposed to carry on a dialogue with an organization which is dedicated to the eradication of our most significant strategic military partner in the Middle East, an organization which has even alienated itself from the group that most countries recognize as the legitimate government of the Palestinian people.

It is truly amazing times that we live in when individual political leaders can take such opposite views in nearly the same sentence and expect the American public to believe them credible.

If Jimmy Carter wants to meet with people who, as a society, praised Adolph Hitler for establishing concentration camps to exterminate Jews then did an about face to deny that the holocaust ever happened, that’s Jimmy’s prerogative as an American citizen. Jimmy was big buddies with Yasser Arafat who, as an Egyptian, made a very good leader for the Palestinians.

Now Clinton, Obama, Pelosi and others want President Bush to repeat the stupid and inept political posturing of Jimmy Carter in 1980. Maybe they attribute the fall of the Soviet Union to Jimmy’s stance then. Right. Jimmy’s defiant stance in boycotting the Moscow Olympics in 1980 led to the fall of the Soviet Union. Right. We’re lucky we’re not all speaking Russian now.

Yet, if these baffoons have their way we could possibly be speaking Arabic in the future. No. I made a mistake. Barack wants us all to be speaking Spanish … then Arabic. But we’re not going to speak Chinese because we’re going to snub them.

Go figure.
